Sleepy Time Kombucha With Tart Cherry To Lull You Into Sweet Slumber

Fizzy bubbly kombucha with some sleepy time tea and tart cherry juice to lull you into sweet slumber! Yep, that’s my newest flavored booch. I just realized that it’s been 2 years since I started making this sweet & sometimes sharp tasting elixir which has improved my health giving me a healthy, giggly gut & happy tummy. All the probiotics in the versatile kombucha have healed my gut, GI problems, yeast infections so much so, I try to persuade everyone I meet to drink this magic nectar too.

My first post on how to brew your own kombucha was published on April 13, 2017 and since then I have given away more than a dozen healthy baby booches to friends and clients to make their own kombucha. That’s how much I trust and believe in it. Every time you make kombucha you get a tiny baby which after a few cycles becomes a strong baby booch which can start a brew of its own. It’s like a gift that keeps on growing and giving.

Of course, there was a short period when I stopped making booch because I thought it was causing GI distress which we later found was due to some medications interacting in my system. I bought store bought kombucha during that time and soon got back to making my own. It is way cheaper and easier to customize plus you know exactly what you’re putting into it. I like experimenting with flavors and with this one I feel I hit jackpot.
Sometimes I like to drink kombucha late evening or in the night: the fizzy gut friendly liquid helps with digestion especially after a spicy heavy curry meal.  Since kombucha usually energizes me and I can be somewhat of an insomniac, I was wary about drinking it late night until I tried this recipe. And it works!  Just a little Sleepy time kombucha helps me fall asleep faster and sleep longer without waking up in between.

We all know that good sleep is important and for some people like my husband who can sleep as soon as his head touches the pillow it’s no big deal. I unfortunately am not in that category.  I am not a fan of sleeping pills although I have taken them, but most times  I have resorted to natural therapy,  turning in early at night and it has helped. So anyway, for all the insomniacs and those who may have that occasional restless night I am excited to share this recipe with you. Wrote this post 2 days back but wanted to test the brew on myself a few days and update before publishing.

The sleepy time herbs are infused into the second ferment. You brew kombucha the normal way and when it’s time to do the second ferment you make this fizzy sparkly sleep time drink. I used celestial seasonings Sleepy time tea. I made 2 cups with 2 bags and I steeped the bags longer than usual to get lots of the Sleepy time herbs in. Then I blended 1 cup of frozen tart cherries with natural cherry juice. I took a flip top bottle and used 1/ 2cup tea, 1/2 cup cherry juice mix and 1 cup of kombucha. My bottles are 16 ounces, so I was able to make 4 bottles with this mixture. I kept it out for about 5 days to build up some serious fizz and when I opened it and poured it into a tall glass, I got a sweet, sour, bubbly drink that could be addicting I think. Maybe it was the sweet cherries or the tart cherry juice but this booch built up so much fizz I had a booch explosion lol! It’s a good thing I opened it outside, so I didn’t have to clean my kitchen ceiling like the last time I had a booch explosion. I took a picture of the booch explosion after most of the fizz had subsided and you see the pink bubbly fizz below. I promptly refrigerated the remaining three bottles since that helps stop the fizz from building up. But last night when I opened a new bottle I still had to be careful, gently burping it before I poured it into a glass.  Next batch I will only keep the bottles out for 2 -3 days. You can add honey to this concoction and since honey is another sleep inducer it would fit nicely in. I opted not to use honey since I wanted to keep this diabetic friendly.

Nutrition Wise and why this works:

Sleepy time tea is packed with chamomile, valerian, honey and other herbs that promote natural sleep. Tart cherries and tart cherry juice have naturally occurring melatonin a hormone that regulates sleep- wake cycles. Put all this together in a probiotic friendly carrier like kombucha and the absorption of all these sleep inducing becomes more potent and easily available to the body promoting good sleep.

Now this is a sleepy time drink so I would not advise anyone to drink this through the day unless you want to take a longish nap! If you want energy through the day try my plain/flavored kombucha, passion fruit flavored kombucha or my pineapple cayenne kombucha.

Anyway, I tried this sleep potion for the last 3 nights and I can report pretty good sleep.  So of course, as with all good things I want to share this recipe with you. From my kitchen brewery to yours: Hope you make my Sleepy time kombucha to lull you into restful slumber! Thanks for stopping by!
