Coconut Milk Chai laced with ginger and some spices make an aromatic cup of tea! Home brewed chai tastes fresh and can be tailored to taste. Switch up milk with coconut milk to get a creamy cup of dairy free, vegan coconut milk chai. When I think about chai it conjures up so many memories for me. Growing up in India I was always fascinated by the chai wallahs would very adeptly perform the “metre-pour”, where the chai wallah blends the chai and cools it by pouring it back and forth between pots or glasses at two arm-lengths apart. Frothy chai latte to go? I always thought it was such a cool trick. I also have memories my student days at CMC, Vellore where we would intern/study in the hospital through the day, relax in the evening and sneak off to our favorite chai shop AKA “ The Hole In The Wall” at 11.00 pm. This was an effort to keep ourselves from falling asleep to complete all the coursework and assignments and it worked!! That magical chai would keep us up till 2.am and just how we survived on 4 hrs. of sleep I don’t know. Flash forward and I still enjoy chai and I love my dairy free coconut milk chai. Coconut adds a subtle nutty flavor to the chai and when I add in some spices , it tastes super creamy. I usually crush the spices in a motor pestle and this helps release the flavors and make it stronger. You can also powder the spices and use a pinch. I keep a little jar of powdered chai spice mix at work, so I can indulge in that creamy coconut milk chai latte at work. Yummy!! I sometimes add some ice cubes to the chai and it turns into a super cool creamy treat. Ok, my picture doesn’t look very frothy because it cooled down by the time I set up my camera shoot and I didn’t have the time to take another shoot 🙂 !! Just be creative with your spice mix. Anything you fancy will taste great ! You can’t go wrong !!!
Warning! This coconut milk chai latte is very creamy because it is made with just milk. If you want to dilute the creaminess, use half water and half milk!
Nutrition Wise: Coconut milk is all natural, vegans, dairy free and is loaded with fats that get burned as fuel very quickly. No wonder it seems to be the choice for a lot of people who want to lose weight the healthy way without starving themselves. It also promotes immune function and has many health benefits. Yumm ! Dairy free = double yumm ! Must try this. Do you recommend heavy coconut milk from the can or the store carton kind ? Really like the blend of spices especially fresh ginger.
Thanks, I use the carton version and it turns out creamy enough !! Think the can may be too rich, but you can try it.
I am lactose intolerant and I have been looking for a good tea ( creamy chai) version. This is great , thanks !! I will be trying this tonight. I may just make a batch of the powdered spice mix. Looks amazing !
Let me know how it goes ! Glad you liked it !
